It was a normal day in Bishops Castle. I had emailed highways with two reports of concern, with quite simple solutions. One was the installation of a convex mirror on a dangerous turning, which I requested a year ago. The other was traffic calming measures outside the playing fields vehicle entrance. As always, I was feeling optimistic. This was the safety of our children after all.

I was met with a very certain no. I was told there is a spending freeze in place until further notice. Even when children’s road safety is a real concern there was no enthusiasm to bypass or find a way around a spend freeze. In my opinion that is shocking, I mean, there is no council tax freeze in place.

In summary. A resident has reported a dangerous road. I absolutely agree. I brought this up at a small public meeting, all the locals agreed. However, Shropshire council have applied a blanket spend freeze on all spending other than maintenance with a safety implication. So, that’s a NO to improvements, a NO to innovation, and a NO to making roads safer for children.

In other news, you may be aware that the council are planning to spend 21 million pounds on a relief road in Shrewsbury. I am also currently looking at ways of reminding Shropshire Council where Bishops Castle is on the map *Holds up sarcasm sign*.

I’m advised to continue until something happens. This is what I will be doing. However, to my mind “children’s road safety” should be all that needs to be said by an elected member to trigger a survey.

In the mean time, remember, look left, right then left again.

  1. It’s because the Ringway contract is coming to an end. I think things will loosen up a little after that . . . oh and the £multi-million black hole in the council finances.
