Last week I put up a post on Facebook and Twitter (@JonnyKeeley) asking local business how the recent changes to business rates will be affecting their businesses.

While I was pleased I received such a lot of responses, some of the numbers were worrying. Many local businesses are already on a knife edge with all of the challenges employers face. For many this is the straw that breaks the camels back.

I have contacted our local MP and recommended that we arrange a meeting with local business owners. Rates have gone up by over 500% for some people. It would be very helpful for a member of parliament to go through these changes and explain exactly why our local businesses are being hit so hard.

Philip Dunne MP told me that he has received my email and would respond soon. If our MP can’t meet I will host a meeting anyway as an open discussion about the rise.

I hope that we can take a proper look at this. The raise seems very disproportionate.

It would be very helpful if you could comment below your own rates and the rise. It would help me gain more perspective and have some real world data to work with.

If you are reading this and your business is not within my division as councillor please comment anyway as this is national policy and the perspective would still be helpful in supporting small local business.
