I am on the enterprise and growth scrutiny committee at Shropshire council. In a recent meeting we were shown a presentation of the current plans for economic growth in the county. The presentation was based on the Economic Growth Strategy currently in draft form. I will leave a link to the strategy at the bottom of the page.

I found the information very interesting. However I noticed how there was a lot of focus on transport links around the m54 and railways. This is something we lack here in the south west of the county.

I made the point that while we will never have strong transport links we could be a center for digital and technological growth. If the south west was enabled with super fast broad while the north was being developed around transport links it would bring a balance to the county. This would mean we would be getting the most out of our Shropshire businesses county wide.

There are many businesses here that are still without a viable internet connection. If we inspire technological growth in the area we will not only strengthen traditional businesses but we will be given our school children and college leavers many more options of employement or starting their own businesses.

Rural Shropshire and technological growth are not things that are usually said at the same time. But I think maybe it should be. With regard to industries which require only an internet connection here is as good as anywhere and it beautiful. The types of industries I’m talking about are Graphic Design, Web Design, Software Development, Games Development, Photography, Working from Home, 3D modelling, B&B’s etc… the list is very long.

I’m not saying I don’t want better transport links, my point is that we will never be getting closer to the M54. I’m saying lets make the most of what we’ve got and invest in our strengths.

Let me know what you think in the comments below. It is very helpful for me to hear what people think.
